ALC (Articulated Loading Column)
A device that allows vessels to be secured from a single point in order to load oil. The Maureen ALC is located about 2.4 kilometres from the platform.

APPRAISAL DRILLING
Drilling carried out to determine the physical extent, reserves and likely production rate of a field.

ASSOCIATED GAS
Natural gas found in association with oil either dissolved in the oil or as a cap of free gas above the oil.

BARGE
A non-self-propelled vessel used as a base for drilling equipment, to carry cranes, support facilities.

BARREL
The unit of measurement used for petroleum and its products: 1 barrel - 42 U.S. gallons or 35 Imperial gallons

BLOWOUT PREVENTER (BOP)
A hydraulically operated drilling wellhead device designed to ensure that a blowout cannot occur.

BOPD/BPD
Barrels per day

BY-PRODUCT
A substance obtained incidentally during the manufacture or production of some other substance.
